Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable. To see how extremist these programs are, just consider the tactics they boast of using to achieve those ends: “false flag operations” (posting material to the internet and falsely attributing it to someone else), fake victim blog posts (pretending to be a victim of the individual whose reputation they want to destroy), and posting “negative information” on various forums.
The old adage goes, “If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention.” As a slight counter to that: if you’re constantly angry, you’re likely being manipulated.
Not to say that every public person you would get mad at, political cause, outrageous media event, or just plain Internet troll are government agents using your emotions as pawns in wars of public opinion being played out just above the surface of what we do in our everyday lives, but it is sobering to know it’s a possibility.
Of course, I could also be The Man.
We all could be.
Senseless tirade aside, I demand a stylish propaganda poster with DENY, DISRUPT, DEGRADE, and DECEIVE displayed on waving banners attached to war trumpets. The color scheme should be vibrant, and should inspire me to join some vaguely defined cause. Artist friends, make this a reality.
